If you asked a room full of successful people whether they have goals, most of them would say yes. It doesn’t matter whether they’re successful in business or some other pursuit.

You’ll find a lot of them even write down their goals and carry them around everywhere they go.

It’s because there are clear goals and targets. If you removed the goals from football, the whole thing becomes pointless. It’s just 20 men chasing around a ball.

It sounds silly, but this is what life is like for people who don’t have goals. Their life is like the chasing of a ball. They can’t articulate why they’re doing it and they don’t know where they are going.

GET CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT

Is it any surprise that successful people know what they want?

If you don’t know what you want, you won’t ever know whether you’re successful, because you never defined what success means to you. It’s just like chasing a ball and not knowing why you’re doing it.

Paul O’Mahony finds that his clients’ biggest challenges are simply getting clear on what they want. Sometimes, they’ll struggle to articulate their goals beyond just “more money” or “a bigger car.”

Start by setting simple, easy to reach goals in the different areas of your life. Business and financial goals are easy to set. For your family life, as an example, you could set yourself the goal of contacting one person each month in your extended family.

Once you get clear on what you want, the rest of the process unfolds itself with less effort than you might think.
